Top 5 Anime to Watch in 2021
The year is 2021 now, 2020 felt like it went by in a flash thanks to quarantine. Regardless, anime creators worked hard to keep releasing and continuing anime for dedicated fans every day. There were so many iconic anime released last year and 2021 does not pale in comparison. This year has a lot of anime in store, the best of which are sequels to anime series fans already love. When it comes to revolutionary anime sequels, these five titles featured below take the cake.
1. BIO-MECH GLORY of ATTACK ON TITAN Season 4!
This is probably one of the hottest anime this season, which is also the highest anticipated. Attack on Titan started way back in Spring 2013 from Season 1, which featured 25 episodes in total. This was the epic initialization of this Titanic anime, produced by Wit Studio and licensed by Funimation. The anime is based on the Manga of the same title; Shingeki no Kyojin or Attack on Titan. This R - 17+ rated anime (for violence & profanity) featured multiple genres of Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy and Shounen. Season 2 aired in Spring 2017, featuring only 12 episodes. Season 3 was split into Part 1 with 12 episodes (Summer 2018) and Part 2 with 10 episodes (Spring 2019). The fourth and Final season was taken up by a different studio, MAPPA, and is also split into two parts. Part 1 consisted 16 episodes and aired as a Winter 2021 anime. Now fans eagerly await Part 2 set to release in Winter 2022 which will conclude the series once and for all.
So what’s Attack on Titan all about? The story takes place centuries ago, when mankind was nearly slaughtered to extinction by horrific humanoid monsters called Titans. In a desperate attempt to survive, humans hide in terror behind enormous walled enclosures. Titans are so terrifying due to their towering size and their taste for human flesh, which is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. Fractured and torn, all the surviving humans live inside the enclosures for about a century without issue. Yet this transient calm is shattered by a colossal titan breaching the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations. Protagonist Eren Yeager is a young boy longing for the true freedom that lies outside the walls, but their world is cruel beyond comparison and he is destined to get caught in the middle of humanity’s bloody fate. This anime is one dark fantasy sure to keep all viewers at the edge of their seats.
2. THE QUIRKY GOODNESS of MY HERO ACADEMIA Season 4
My Hero Academia or Boku no Hero Academia is an Action, Comedy, School, Shounen and Super Power anime rated PG-13 for Teens 13 or older. Studio Bones took up the entire series and released the 13 episode Season 1 in Spring 2016. Season 2 was released in Spring 2017 featuring 25 episodes in total. Season 3 aired in Spring 2018 with 25 episodes and Season 4 aired in Fall 2019 with 25 episodes. Now Season 5 is currently airing as a Spring 2021 anime, set to release a total of 25 episodes. Boku no Hero Academia is adapted from the manga of the same title by Mangaka Horikoushi Kouhei. He stated that the American superhero comics are the inspiration for the series, and has based character pages on logos for Marvel and DC comic characters.
The story is set in a world full of “Quirks”, newly discovered super powers, that have been steadily increasing over time. At present times, nearly 80 percent of humanity possesses a quirk which ranges from manipulation of elements to shapeshifting. Protagonist Izuku Midoriya is supposedly one of the unlucky 20 percent. Regardless, Izuku is a determined middle schooler wanting nothing more than to be a hero. Fate however, leads him to meet the number one hero and his personal idol, All Might. All Might's quirk is secretly an unique ability that can be inherited and Izuku is chosen as the successor! After months of training, Izuku manages to enroll in his dream school, UA High, the best Hero school around. Joining him are his unique classmates, together with whom he must face the looming threat of a villainous organization. This is the story of how Izuku became the world’s greatest hero!
3. THE PETRIFIED MADNESS of DR. STONE Season 2
Summer 2019 had such an amazing collection of Anime. One of the best new titles was without a doubt Dr. Stone. TMS Entertainment Studio brought this Sci-Fi, Adventure, Comedy and Shounen anime to life, featuring 24 episodes rated PG-13 for Teens 13 or older. Dr. Stone: Stone Wars which is the Season 2 of the series released in Summer 2019 by the same Studio. It ran for a total of 11 episodes.
One fateful day, a blinding green light strikes the Earth and petrifies humanity, turning every single human into stone. Several millennia later, high schooler Taiju awakens in a natural Stone world, where Modern society is non-existent. Here Taiju encounters his science-loving friend Senku, who had been active for a few months. Senku has a massive plan: to launch the complete revival of civilization with science. Taiju's brawn and Senku's brains combine to move forward as they even discover how to undo the prettification. But not everyone they unpetrified shared their ideologies, thus sparks a division into factions. Tsukasa Shishiou believes that only the fittest of those petrified should be revived and now stand in the way of Senku’s Science Kingdom. Now Senku and his allies in Ishigami Village finish their preparations for attacking the Tsukasa Empire. The “war” is more of a plan to recruit the sizable numbers of Tsukasa's army to their side. Senkuu and the Kingdom of Science are determined to stop Tsukasa's forces in order to fulfill their goal of restoring humanity and all its creations. With both sides each in pursuit of their ideal world, the Stone Wars have now begun!
4. HOLD YOUR BREATH w/ DEMON SLAYER Season 2
Demon Slayer or Kimetsu no Yaiba was the biggest hit of Spring 2019. The 26 episode series by Studio Ufotable featured genres of Action, Demons, Historical, Shounen and Supernatural, rated R - 17+ for violence & profanity. Season 2 was an astonishing success, dethroning even long running giants in its wake. The direct sequel was the BLOCKBUSTER hit Movie: The Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen which featured the canonical events from the Manga of the same title. Following the movie's immense global success, Season 2 has finally been announced for late 2021.
Protagonist Tanjirou Kamado had supported his family after the death of his father. They lived on a remote mountain, poor but happy. One fateful day, Tanjiro goes down to the local village to sell charcoal and is prevented from returning home that night due to the warnings about flesh-eating demons lurking in the woods at night. When he returns home the next day, he faces a grim reality; the whole family had been slaughtered by a demon. The sole survivor is his sister Nezuko, who had been turned into a demon herself. Tanjirou i8s determined to avenge his family and turn Nezuko back to normal. Thus he meets the organization known as the Demon Slayer Corps, who specialize in slaying demons. Becoming a Demon Slayer himself after rigorous training, Tanjiro will not falter in his goal. Season 2, Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen focuses on Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke, under the guidance of the Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui, travel to the Yoshiwara red light district in order to hunt down a demon that had been terrorizing the town.
5. THAT TIME I GOT REINCARNATED AS SLIME (Slimy AWESOMENESS)
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, also known as TenSura is the best selling Japanese Light Novel to date. The series got adapted into an amazing Anime in Fall 2018. Season 1 featured 24 episodes, under the genres of Action, Adventure, Comedy, Demons, Magic and Fantasy, rated PG-13 for Teens 13 or older. Studio 8bit released all the seasons of the anime. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 released in Winter 2021 with 12 episodes and now Season 3 (Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken Season 2 Part 2) is set to release sometime in July 2021.
Protagonist Satoru Mikami is a typical corporate worker, content with his monotonous life in Tokyo, despite not having a girlfriend. He ends up falling victim to a random assailant on the streets and dies. While dying, a voice echoes in his head and recites a bunch of commands. Satoru then gets reincarnated as a slime in an unfamiliar realm. He had managed to acquire an overpowered skill to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities stemming from his dying wishes. He has a fateful encounter with the "Storm Dragon" Veldora, who had been sealed away. Satoru befriends the dragon and promises to destroy the seal, and “devours” him so that he wouldn't be left behind alone again. Thankful to the Slime, Veldora gives him the name Rimuru Tempest and grants him divine protection. Rimuru now embarks on a new journey with a distinct goal in mind. As he grows accustomed to his new physique, his slimy antics ripple throughout the new world, gradually altering his fate and the world’s.
